How to Reduce Water Evaporation
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Along with regular maintenance and monitoring of the water’s chemistry, you should also keep an eye on how much water your pool is losing as a result of evaporation.
While evaporation is a natural occurrence, losing too much can be bad for your property’s water efficiency and may also suggest your pool has a leak.
In this article, the team here at Claffey Pools will explain what is the normal evaporation of water in your pool, as well as our top tips on how to reduce water evaporation.
How much pool water evaporation is normal?
An average pool can typically expect to lose a quarter of an inch of water every day. However, conditions such as the intensity of the wind, rain, humidity, and sunlight will impact this.
It’s sometimes hard to detect how much water your pool is losing, but you can use the bucket test to check if your pool water evaporation rate seems abnormal.
Follow the steps below to perform the test:
- Filling your pool to its regular level
- Placing a bucket five inches deep into the pool (usually this is on the first or second step)
- Mark the water level with tape or a marker pen
- Wait 24 hours
- Check the water in the bucket and compare it to the surrounding water level
- If the water level of your pool is lower than the water in the bucket, you are likely losing too much water
If the bucket test has revealed your pool is losing more water than normal, it is likely due to a leak rather than evaporation. If this is the case, please call our service team to schedule a leak detection inspection.
How to reduce water evaporation
Fortunately, there are a few ways you can reduce the amount of water lost because of evaporation.
Switch off water features
While they often make a stylish and enjoyable addition to a pool, water features can contribute to evaporation.
This is because they increase the amount of water that is exposed to the sun and the air, which encourages evaporation.
When you’re not using your pool, it is recommended that you switch off any water features.
Use a pool cover
The more exposure your pool water has to the sun, the more evaporation will occur.
With this in mind, you might want to consider using a pool cover to limit this.
There are a whole host of pool cover products and even auto-covers available, with some known to limit water evaporation by up to 95%.
Turn down the temperature
Warmer water is known to evaporate faster than cooler water, so if you are worried about evaporation then it is worth turning down the temperature.
