With constraints in every direction, this beautiful contemporary design was developed with entertaining in mind. What was once thought of as a lost cause of a skinny backyard with over 4′ of elevation change was uniquely transformed into 6 entertaining spaces which include an artificial turf lawn, 2 tanning areas, fire pit, dining, and bar space. The Equinox structure which transforms from a shade arbor to a fully covered roof with the click of a button adds a perfect complement to the water & fire. Previous designers had told the homeowners that the pool needed to be in the side yard which was unacceptable as they wanted to see the space out of their back windows. The final product was exactly what the owners had envisioned for their dream backyard.
Challenges –
One of the biggest challenges of this project dealt with the spacial constraints and setbacks. Before I began the design, I mapped out any and all setbacks that would apply and we ended up having an 8” width out across the property in which we could put the firepit to meet the 10’ setback off of the home and also the 10’ setback off of the property line. I was then able to start the design from this constraint and the design developed from the fire pit outward.
